F. H. Alexander, Inc. has the expertise and personnel required to perform a wide range of commercial construction projects, from new building construction to commercial renovation projects to industrial plant renovation to hydroelectric plant projects. While most projects performed by the company have been completed as a conventional General Contractor, we have had considerable success utilizing the Design-Build delivery method. Our personnel also have the experience and skills necessary for performance as a Construction Manager.
Regardless of the type of project or the project delivery method, our organizational skills, experience, and commitment to “doing it right” have consistently produced successful projects and satisfied clients.

New Construction and Renovation
Whether the project is new building construction or renovation of an existing structure, we provide the trained personnel, the organizational skills, and the coordination to produce a quality product in a time frame consistent with today’s typically aggressive schedules. During the past several years, we have constructed over 65 Convenience Shops for Stewart’s Ice Cream Co. Each has been completed, from footings to opening date, in less than six weeks.
In most projects, F. H. Alexander, Inc. acts as a conventional General Contractor, with design documents produced by the Owner’s or Tenant’s design professional.
Recently completed projects include a state-of-the-art equine surgical facility for Saratoga Equine Veterinary Service, renovation of 35,000 square feet of office space in Glens Falls for Allstate Insurance, and Construction of a new Town Hall for the Town of Stuyvesant, New York.

Design/Build Projects
The Design/Build method of project delivery is often an extremely effective process, providing the project owner with a quality product, as well as the benefit of a single contact for project coordination.
Unlike the conventional system of contractors developing pricing based on a completed set of architectural documents, our involvement in the design process from the beginning provides a practical perspective to assist in the development of the documents. This collaborative approach can provide significant cost savings to the owner both in design costs and construction expense. This is true whether F. H. Alexander, Inc. is the prime contractor, or the Architect is the prime contractor.
Although we have completed numerous projects using a Design/Build contract arrangement, most notable is the 93,000 square foot Executive Woods building in Clifton Park, completed for DCG Development Co.

Construction Management
For the project owner who desires to have the maximum involvement in the details of construction, engaging a Construction Management firm may be a logical choice.
Construction Management services can be provided during the pre-construction phase of the project or during the actual construction, or both. During pre-construction, the Construction Manager is able to work with the Design Professional in developing a cost effective, practical design. By developing preliminary estimates and schedules, the groundwork is laid for smooth, orderly completion of the project.
During the Construction phase, the Construction Manager serves as the Owner’s representative, performing such tasks as obtaining and evaluating bids for the various trade contractors, qualifying and recommending specific trade contractors, reviewing payment requests and submittals made by trade contractors, and continually advising and assisting the owner in the administration of the project.
By utilizing the Construction Manager’s expertise in both construction and contracting procedures, and entering into contracts directly with specialty trade contractors, the owner may maintain more direct control over the project, and may, in some cases, experience some cost savings.

Pre-Engineered Buildings
If your project plan includes a large, open floor plan, an optimal solution may be a Pre-Engineered building. Pre-Engineered buildings are cost-effective solutions for many additional applications and building styles.
The use of a steel Pre-Engineered building, shop fabricated and shipped to the project site, can reduce the time required for completion of a project by weeks, sometimes months. In general, through reduced labor costs for assembly and reduced overhead costs by reduced construction time, cost savings can be considerable when compared to conventional steel construction. A Pre-Engineered building offers a considerable clear span capability, making it an ideal choice for applications which require large floor areas free of columns.
While the most cost-effective exterior construction is simple steel siding, Pre-Engineered buildings may be finished with brick, decorative concrete block, or a combination of any of these. Interior finishes can be as varied or as simple as any conventionally constructed building.
Our highly organized approach to building construction, coupled with the ability and experience of our personnel, has been successful in producing quality Pre-engineered projects ranging from a simple unheated 30,000 square foot storage building for Pacific Plastics to an attractive, modern printing facility with warehouse and office space constructed for Fortress Partners

Hydroelectric Work
Hydroelectric and Dam construction is one of the specialized services offered by F. H. Alexander, Inc.
Recent projects include concrete rehabilitation at Spier Falls Hydro Plant and the Sherman Island Plant for Niagara Mohawk Power Co. These projects entailed repairing the sides of several 3 foot diameter, 30 foot-deep vertical concrete shafts. An additional unique and challenging project, among several others for the utility company, included repointing the stone face of the Spier Falls Dam, an eighty foot-high dam originally constructed in 1903.
Another Spier Falls renovation recently completed by F.H. Alexander involved two 18 ton steel intake gates. This project consisted of temporary water control, removal of the gates for renovation, modification of the sealing surfaces, and reinstallation of the gates.
The experience and imagination of management and supervisory personnel has been instrumental in developing safe and innovative methods to accomplish the unique tasks required by these challenging and potentially dangerous projects.
